Our Mission

At MSCG, we grow more than just food — we grow community. Rooted in sustainability and driven by a spirit of connection, our garden is a living hub where individuals and families can nourish their bodies, nurture the earth, and thrive together. From organic plots to open green spaces, and from free community events to partnerships with purpose, MSCG cultivates a greener, healthier, and more compassionate future for all.

Our Roots: The Story of MSCG

What started as a dream in 2012 blossomed into a vibrant oasis on Chicago’s Near West Side. Founded by neighbors from all walks of life, Maxwell Street Community Garden (MSCG) was built with one powerful idea: that growing food together could also grow connection, safety, and well-being in the community.

But in 2018, MSCG faced a major challenge: the land was being sold. Rather than give up, the community rallied. With vision and grit, we raised funds and made plans to move — just across the street — to land protected as permanent green space under the CHA’s Plan for Transformation.

In spring 2019, over 50 volunteers dug in — literally. In just two weekends, they moved over 100 cubic yards of mulch, built 60 raised beds, and lovingly replanted every perennial. A grand reopening and joyful Harvest Fest marked our new beginning.

Even during the 2020 pandemic, MSCG remained a safe haven — offering socially distanced, open-air space when neighbors needed it most. Today, we serve 80+ households annually, reserve 15% of plots for CHA residents or food donation, and remain deeply rooted in our mission to nourish both people and place.
